Race Relations in the Classroom: Racial Microaggressions at the University of Illinois

Stacy Harwood, associate professor of urban and regional planning at the University of Illinois, presented findings from the Racial Microaggressions at the University of Illinois project. She described a 2011-2012 campus survey of students of color that drew roughly 4,800 responses, and reported findings on harassment, exclusion, informal segregation, campus spaces students avoid, and stereotyping in classrooms and group work. She quoted student testimony at length and closed with recommendations for individuals and campus leadership.
