Steal the University: Making Teaching and Scholarship Work for Publics

UIUC faculty member Naomi Paik described using her courses, writing and institutional budgets for community ends: a 2018 seminar on incarceration that produced survey research for FirstFollowers, her forthcoming book on immigration enforcement, the faculty push for UIUC to declare itself a sanctuary campus after the 2016 election, faculty support for student protest of a visiting ICE officer, and an abolition workshop and lecture series. The second half was an audience brainstorm on what the university owes its community.
