University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Chancellor Robert J. Jones spoke during the University YMCA's 150th anniversary celebration weekend. He congratulated the Y on 150 years, recalled its history of housing students excluded from University dormitories, described his own upbringing as the son of Georgia sharecroppers, and discussed the land-grant mission, food and housing insecurity, and threats to democracy. Michelle Lacey of Diversity and Social Justice Education opened with a land acknowledgment and sponsor list; executive director Jim Hinterlong framed the program, and the student board president introduced the chancellor.
