Books

The University YMCA's two published histories, to read online chapter by chapter. Each chapter is transcribed from the printed book and checked against its pages, and keeps the book's page numbers, so you can cite a page and link straight to it.

Chapter 1

The Y is Born at the Illinois Industrial University

Pages 1–9 of the printed book

How a student prayer meeting became the University YMCA in February 1873, what the Illinois Industrial University campus was like that year, and the movement that produced college YMCAs across the country.

Chapter 2

The Early Years

Pages 10–19 of the printed book

The Y’s first decades: slow growth in membership, the education of Carlos Montezuma, incorporation in 1892 and the first constitution, the evangelistic campaigns, the Lake Geneva conferences, and relations with the YWCA.
