The opening session of the fall 2021 Friday Forum / Conversation Cafe series "Unpacking Racism: What Are We Carrying," co-presented with Diversity and Social Justice Education and held as a New American Welcome Center Welcoming Week event. After introductions including Zoe Foote (immigration legal services), a student moderator, Daniella, led four panelists: retired immigration judge James R. Fujimoto, law professors Lauren Aronson and Michael LeRoy, and Susan Ogwal. They traced racism in US immigration law from the 1790 Naturalization Act and the Chinese Exclusion Act through the 1965 end of national-origins quotas to the Muslim ban and Remain in Mexico, with first-hand accounts from practice.
